Arbor Day!

Today is Arbor Day!
(or Tree Day)

Arbor Day was the idea of J. Sterling Morton.
In 1872, Morton helped start a new holiday
in Nebraska dedicated to tree planting.
It is estimated that more than
one million trees were planted
on the first Arbor Day.

Today we should take time to learn
more about trees you can read
about the many different types.
Or maybe even plant one or two to help out!

Here's a tree fact for you....

Almost all of the material in a tree is nonliving.
Only the leaves, the tips of the branches and roots,
and a thin layer of cells just
under the bark are actually alive.
When a tree grows taller,
the growth takes place only at
the tips of the stems.
For this reason, the birdhouse you've
mounted on the trunk of a tree
will always remain at the same height,
and the swing you've hung from
a lower limb will never grow too high to reach!

Pretty cool, huh?

Enjoy Arbor Day, my friends!

Later -- Remington --
I think I will plant an apple tree!
-- out!

See you on May Day!

Great post! Thank you for sharing those facts about trees! Now if only we had a place to plant one. We will have to make Meowm look online and see if she can't donate to have one planted somewheres.

It slipped right by me, Rem! If it weren't for you, I would be so out of it. I thought the whole tree was alive, that is rather shocking to me!! Love learning all this!

Hi Rem,
We are sorry we are late...mom recorded all 6 hours of the Royal Wedding she just finished watching the 1st 3 hours. MOL We found your post very interesting especially after having just seen the Wedding. The main deocrations in Westminster Abbey were live maple trees still in containers. After the wedding the trees will be planted in the country side. Mom absolutely loved seeing the outside inside.
Hugs and happy weeekend.

I spent the afternoon cleaning up around some trees in our yard and making sure they were healthy. We are getting a space ready for a new tree very soon.

Hi Remington! We are super late commenting on this one (mom was sick last week and is just starting to catch up) and even though we will post at your todays post too we had to comment here, because we live right by the Morton Arboretum! Mom loves to visit there and walk through the trees and leaves - she said it is very pretty there. We don't get to go but we do know she always comes home smelling good like leaves and stuff after going there.
