Pet Blessing Day

October 4th is Pet Blessing Day

A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats
to hamsters and even horses,
is led to churches for a special ceremony
called the Blessing of Pets.

This custom is conducted in remembrance of
St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord
often welcomes each animal with a special prayer.
The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker
of all living creatures.
You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air
and animals on the land. You inspired
St. Francis to call all of them his
brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless this pet.
By the power of your love,
enable it to live according to your plan.
May we always praise you for
all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Lord our God,
in all your creatures!
Amen.”
**********
So on this very special day
Mike and Beth gave me a gift
to put on my collar in honor of
Pet Blessing Day.
The pictures didn't turn out too good
but you will get the idea.

One side says:

Saint Francis Watch over my Newfoundland

The other side says:

If by
chance I go
astray,
pray St. Francis
I find my way
for in my bed
I have to sleep
so my master
will not weep.
Wasn't that nice....

So for Pet Blessing Day --

Bless all creatures big and small....

Later -- Remington --
a blessed Newfie
-- out!

PLEASE NOTE:

Ozabella DID NOT have surgery today....
Another little "girl problem" came up this weekend....
whatever that means....
so Beth said we are going to wait
another month.
Thanks to all that sent out
good wishes and posts today....

Hi Remington! That is a great medal for you to wear - we didn't realize that today was pet blessing day (we knew it was coming up but didn't know it was today). And oh poor Ozabella - we hope she is ok and that once she finally gets to the surgery it goes off with no problems!
Gus sends her HI's! He is glad she didn't have to have surgery today because he of course was worried (he is the worrier of our group) but he knows it will be a good thing when she gets it done!!

Wow, what a cool and special tag, Rem!! Does this make you Saint Remington? Hmm...Kind of like a Saint Bernard? Well, I digress. I didn't even know that Ozabella was to have surgery!! And it was postponed? Was it for her breathing problem, what were they going to do? Hope I didn't read about this in an earlier post, and then forget! Hey, now that you have your special medal, you can say a blessing over her! And that would be a very saintly thing to do!

I wonder if St. Francis would cure me of being a cracker dog. I'll have to ask him. Hey Rem, my assistant saw a Newfoundland at PetSmart yesterday getting groomed. She had NO idea you were such a big doggy & said pictures don't really convey your hugeness!
