On todays show we are featuring the Bald Eagle. We did a story on this bird last year too but it is one of our favorite so here we go again!
These pictures were taken on our way over to Brainerd, MN. There are a lot of eagles in our area.
The picture below is a juvenile eagle we saw another day on our way to Brainerd. As juvenile bald eagles mature, their head and tail feathers gradually turn white; simultaneously the eyes and beak gradually turn yellow. Complete transformation to maturity is achieved sometime in the fifth year.
Eagles facts --
* Wild bald eagles may live as long as thirty years, some have lived 50 years in captivity.
* Bald eagles weigh from ten to fourteen pounds.
* Bald eagles can fly to an altitude of 10,000 feet. Eagles fly 20 to 60 miles per hour in normal flight and dive at more than 100 miles an hour.
* Wingspan ranges from 72 to 90 inches.
* The female bald eagle is 35 to 37 inches, slightly larger than the male.
* Once paired, bald eagles remain together until one dies.
* The bald eagle became the National emblem in 1782 when the great seal of the United States was adopted.
